(there will be no neat pioneers, clean streets, or golden statues here; there will be real, harsh life)

North Korea is considered one of the most closed countries in the world. Before the pandemic, only 4-6 thousand Western tourists visited it, and the main tourist flow was from Chinese citizens. You cannot simply buy a plane or train ticket and travel to the DPRK. Travel is only possible through special intermediary companies. Any contact with the local population is strictly prohibited, and independent travel by tourists is also prohibited. You cannot simply open a map and go out into the city, or buy a bus ticket and go to the suburbs or a neighboring city, or just walk into the first store you come across. Photography is also supervised by guide-interpreters. You can take pictures of golden statues of leaders, clean streets, neat traffic controllers at intersections, and well-groomed pioneers. But anything related to the ordinary, meager life of ordinary people is highly undesirable.

I took this photo report in 2019. I managed to capture an old truck catching fire on a street in Pyongyang, huge queues at tram stops, a trolleybus being repaired in the cold right on the road, and a queue for food at the «back door.» I obtained particularly valuable photographs during trips outside the capital. A notable image is that of a prisoner in a cold train car, guarded by a female soldier. Also interesting are photographs of a soldier herding geese and wrapping a footcloth around his leg, children skating on homemade skates, and the image of a man giving me the finger. And, of course, there are many photographs of hard manual labor by peasants. There is even a photograph of girls gathering ears of grain in frozen ground.

Северная Корея считается одной из самых закрытых стран мира. До пандемии ее посещало лишь 4-6 тысяч западных туристов, а основной турпоток был за счет граждан Китая. Нельзя просто купить билет на самолет или поезд и поехать в КНДР. Поездка возможна только лишь через специальные фирмы-посредники. Любые контакты с местным населением под строгим запретом, самостоятельное перемещение туристов так же запрещено. Нельзя просто открыть карту и выйти в город, или купить билет на автобус и поехать в пригород или соседний город, нельзя просто взять и зайти в первый попавшийся магазин. Фотосъемка тоже под наблюдением гидов-переводчиков. Золотые статуи вождям, чистые улицы, аккуратных регулировщиц на перекрестках, опрятных пионеров снимать можно. А все, что касается обычной скудной жизни простых людей крайне не желательно. 

Я снимала этот фоторепортаж в 2019 году. Мне удалось запечатлеть как загорелся старенький грузовик на улице Пхеньяна, огромные очереди на остановках трамвая, как на морозе прям на дороге ремонтируют троллейбус, очередь за продуктами с «заднего входа». Особо ценные снимки я получила во время выездов из столицы. Знаковым кадром является снимок заключенного в холодном вагоне, которого охраняет девушка-военная. Также интересны снимки на которых военный пасет гусей и наматывает портянку на ногу, дети катаются на самодельных коньках, и тот кадр где мужчина показывает мне фигу. И конечно же много фотографий тяжелого ручного крестьянского труда. И даже есть снимок где девушки собирают колоски в мерзлой земле.
